FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana's NewsCenter) – Indiana’s NewsCenter has learned Fort Wayne Community Schools faces a $15 million dollar deficit because of dwindling state funding for K-12 education.
The FWCS Board has give Superintendent Dr. Wendy Robinson and her staff 30 days to create a new lean 2010-2011 budget.
On Tuesday afternoon, school leaders announced they are up to the challenge and will make painful yet necessary cuts across the board.
The upcoming cuts could affects teachers, administrators, classroom initiatives and after school programs.
“We don’t want to have to change programs, we don’t want to have to impact people but that’s the reality,“ said FWCS Superintendent Dr. Wendy Robinson.
The only area that will not see any cuts is the district’s full-day Kindergarten program.
Executives say they will tackle the task by analyzing the current budget line by line to save FWCS $15 million dollars in expenses from its general budget.
The cuts are expected to stay in place for the entire 2010 school year and more cuts are being anticipated for the 2011 school year.
“We intend to come back and discuss this in public. So that people can be comfortable with the fact that, they might not like all the results but we had a thoughtful process that resulted in us making the absolute best decisions for the kids and for the community,” said Dr. Robinson as she concluded her Tuesday interview.
The public meetings will begin after the FWCS Board has review the proposal.
District leaders want parents and community members to voice their opinions on the cuts through a transparent and open community dialogue.
