FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana's NewsCenter) - The Vera Bradley Foundation for Breast Cancer and the IPFW Women's basketball program teamed up Saturday to raise money for breast cancer research.

The game started off with a quick blow of a pink whistle.

The Lady Dons sported cool custom made pink shoes.

The sea of pink in the Allen County Memorial Coliseum was apart of the third annual IPFW Pink Out bringing survivors together to benefit breast cancer research.

"To come together with all of these women and to know that the money that we're raising is being used for research to find a cure for breast cancer so that one day we wont have events like this anymore," said Susan Alderman, a seven year breast cancer survivor.

Organizers say with nearly 200-thousand women diagnosed with breast cancer every year, its unfortunately a disease most people can relate to first hand.

"I think it's a curse and a blessing in a way," said Catherine Hill, the Executive Director of the Vera Bradley Foundation for Breast Cancer.

"We do really well with fund raising in our events because exactly what you said everybody knows somebody that's been affected so we are all apart of wanting to find the cure," said Hill.

During half time, a special ceremony was held where dozens of survivors walked onto the court to a standing ovation.

"It's a way for us to honor the survivors and caregivers in Fort Wayne. We feel like that's being a great corporate citizen here in Fort Wayne," said Tommy Bell the Director of Athletics at IPFW.

"Breast cancer will not be the death sentence that it once was. Every year fewer and fewer women are dying of breast cancer and that's the whole reason everybody gets involved, that's why I'm involved with it," said Alderman.

All of the proceeds from Saturday's Pink Out will benefit the Vera Bradley Foundation for Breast Cancer, which helps support breast cancer research at the Indiana University School of Medicine.
