FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana’s NewsCenter) - More than 9,000 Fort Wayne Community School students will see a schedule change in the fall.
All Fort Wayne Community High School students will switch to a seven-period day beginning this fall. This means students will have seven 50-minute classes a day.
Students currently take four classes a day, each class an hour and a half long, in what's called "block" scheduling.
FWCS switched to "block" scheduling in fall of 2002 to bring consistency to the high schools.
School officials say students did not respond as well academically as they would have liked, so they're switching to the seven 50-minute classes.
“With the 50 minute classes it does increase time on task,” Fort Wayne Community Schools Spokesperson Krista Stockman said. “With longer classes after awhile students start to dis-engage. And so they get bored with that subject they want to move on. So with the 50-minute periods we think that will help more because they'll be more engaged.”
This change comes after school officials announced their new “LEAD" school program, for schools that are re-forming to qualify for federal money.
The transportation schedule may change for high school students, which could affect the elementary and middle school students.
FWCS officials say it would be a minor change, but they will let us know soon.
