FORT WAYNE, IN (Indiana's NewsCenter) --- East Allen County School board members on Tuesday got more serious about the tedious process of trying to identify spending cuts to deal with a projected four-million dollar budget shortfall.
The first of two scheduled work sessions afforded school administrators and board members the chance to "bat" around a host of cost-cutting ideas.
Among the ideas considered, small things like sharing printers to reduce toner cartridge replacement expenses, and big things like whether some parents should be asked to pick up part of the tab for full-day kindergarten.
There was no discussion about cutting teaching positions, though, the teacher's union even admits, achieving the kind of savings that are needed will be tough unless that's part of the equation.
Greg Geise/East Allen Educators Assn.: " It will be very difficult to avoid that entirely. I think our position would be, to the extent that can be done, we want to see cuts or cost considerations to be as far away from the students as is possible."
Other money-saving ideas discussed included adopting "pay to play" for sports and other extra-curricular activities, as well as possible changes to summer school to find savings.
