January 2010 Indiana Employment Report

INDIANAPOLIS (News Release) - Indiana's preliminary seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate for January 2010 did not change from the revised December 2009 rate of 9.7 percent (-0.2 percent). Indiana matched the national rate of 9.7 percent.

"Similar to the rest of the nation, Indiana isn't seeing much change right now," said Teresa Voors, Commissioner of the Indiana Department of Workforce Development. "Indiana's unemployment rate appears to be holding relatively stable based on the slowing of job losses."

Seasonally-adjusted total non-farm employment in Indiana declined by 2,000 in January. Sectors reporting significant employment increases include: Manufacturing (3,900), Financial Activities (600) and Professional and Business Services (600). Sectors reporting significant employment declines include: Private Education and Health Services (-5,700), Leisure and Hospitality (-2,600) and Construction (-2,200).

Indiana continues to report the lowest unemployment among its neighboring states. Ohio's unemployment rate remained unchanged at 10.8 percent. Illinois increased 0.3 percent to 11.3 percent. Kentucky increased 0.1 percent to 10.7 percent. Michigan's unemployment rate decreased 0.2 percent to 14.3 percent.

Comparing employment data year-to-year, Indiana's unemployment rate increased approximately half as much as the U.S. and neighboring Midwest states. Indiana's unemployment rate grew 0.9 percent from the January 2009 rate of 8.8 percent. Kentucky climbed 1.6 percent. Ohio increased 2.2 percent. Michigan grew 3.0 percent. Illinois jumped 3.2 percent. The US unemployment rate increased 2.0 percent from January 2009.
