UNDATED (Indiana's NewsCenter) - A warning for spring breakers heading south of the border.

The State Department has updated its travel alert for Mexico.

Officials warn travelers to be vigilant because of escalating violence and drug related cartel crimes.

Robberies, homicides, petty thefts, and carjackings have all increased over the past year across Mexico.

Officials say travelers should especially avoid areas near the U.S. - Mexico border and cities like Tijuana, Nogales, and Durango.

Travel Consultant Carol Cornell says, “We've had a few people who've called with questions. We tell them, really what we always tell them about Mexico and other places in the Caribbean. Stay within your resort, know where you're going.”

Cornell also went on to say if you're booked on a cruise, make sure you stick to excursions with the cruise company.

And check in often with someone at home who knows where you're supposed to be.
