WASHINGTON, D.C. (Indiana's NewsCenter) - 3rd District Congressman Mark Souder says although he's against the healthcare bill, the legislation could become law as early as Sunday night.
Veteran Congressman Mark Souder says the plan will cost at least a trillion dollars, which would be paid for by medicare cuts and annuity and second home tax increases. (for example lake homes)
However, the Congressional Budget Office says the bill will cut the deficit by at least 100 billion dollars over the next ten years.
Congressman Souder says he would only vote for a healthcare plan that calls for incremental changes and major medical lawsuit reform.
On the other hand, local healthcare supporters say they realize Democrats and Republicans will never agree on all healthcare points, but all Americans must have access to healthcare.
"I think this is something that we as Americans in this country need to remember which one of our relatives would we be willing to lose because they didn't have healthcare or access to get healthcare," said Allen County Democratic Party Chairman Mike Bynum.
"Immediate impact is lots of people are going to have tax increases. The bill is phased in over a number of years as far as the benefits. Some benefits would come earlier than other but it would take at least five years for most people to see the benefits," said 3rd District Congressman Mark Souder.
A final vote on the bill could take place around 9 p.m.
If everything goes the Democrats way, President Barack Obama could sign the bill into law tonight or tomorrow morning.
