WASHINGTON, D.C. (Indiana's NewsCenter) - The U.S. House passed the highly controversial sweeping health care reform legislation late Sunday night.
The vote was 219-212. No Republicans voted for the bill, while all but 34 Democrats voted for it. The opposing Republicans included Indiana Congressmen Mark Souder, Mike Pence and Dan Burton, who each represent parts of Northeast Indiana.
The measure now heads to President Obama for his signature.
The House also passed a reconciliation bill with a package of changes to the health care bill. That vote came about a half hour after the first bill was approved and now goes to the Senate.
After the House business ended, President Obama praised lawmakers for passing the bill, saying "it's a victory for the American people."
Republicans plan to fight the bill either by working to repeal it or by using the issue to defeat Democrats in this year's elections.
