FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana’s NewsCenter) - If you plan on flying be prepared for a new, more comprehensive security screening.
New advanced imaging technology is in place at the Fort Wayne International Airport that can see through your clothing for any hazards.
Passengers remove their shoes, wallet, belt, and any other personal items and then step up to the $130,000 machine.
A wand quickly bounces waves off your skin and transmits a picture of you to a secure location where another employee will analyze the picture.
TSA officials tell Indiana’s NewsCenter this employee will never see your face or meet you in person. This is one way to ensure your privacy is protected.
“The technology itself, it will not store an image. It will not transmit an image,” TSA Federal Security Director of FWA David Kane said. “There is no capability of printing an image. Once the imaged is viewed, it is immediately erased and is not retrievable. We have procedures in place that ensures that the person viewing the image is not the same person dealing with the passenger out here at the checkpoint. The two will never see one another.”
If you don’t want to walk through the device you can tell a TSA employee and you must go through a metal detector, and receive a through pat down.
Fort Wayne International is one of 28 airports to receive the machine Friday. Federal stimulus money paid for the device.
TSA officials have purchased 450 machines with stimulus money. Fifty-eight units are in 24 airports nationwide, including Indianapolis International.
