HUNTINGTON, Ind. (Indiana's NewsCenter) - The Huntington Fire Department is re-opening a fire station and bringing back all laid-off firefighters thanks to a federal grant.

Mayor Steve Updike closed the "East End Fire Department" in November because of budget issues.

The six-firefighters who lost their jobs will return to work thanks to a "Safer Grant".

But before they can put their boots on the mayor must ask city council to borrow "CEDIT Money" to pay for their first three-months of wages and benefits.

Officials say that money will be paid back by FEMA.

Huntington Firefighters Association President Wayne Huff says, “When we filled out this grant, we had to give a heavy amount of information to FEMA to be able to receive the grant...and just by receiving the grant justifies that we do need all 41 full-time firefighters on duty in the city of Huntington.”

Huff hopes the firefighters can return to work in two-to-three weeks.
