The leader of the State's "Grand Ole Party" argues the controversy surrounding Matt Kelty is only a "bump" in the road. Murray Clark admitted Fort Wayne’s mayoral race is raising the eye-brows of many across the state. Nicole Pence reports.
In a closed meeting at a former republican leader's home, state chairman, Murray Clark and Matt Kelty ate doughnuts and talked politics for about an hour early Wednesday.
Indiana's NewsCenter reported yesterday that Clark was in town to talk to republican leaders about Kelty’s legal problems. The State’s GOP Chairman acknowledges the nine-indictments Kelty faces do not help his quest to be mayor. But the Chairman contends Kelty’s a fierce campaigner, and the party anticipates a win in November.
Murray Clark/State GOP Chairman: ( There has been a lot of divide with in the Republican Party here in Allen County and specifically with Steve Shine disbanded the executive committee last week. Do you have any comment on that?) Well, I mean, I think, they say family fights are the worst. As my dad always aid it's a long road with many twists and turns. As a party we will be fine in the end. It's not unusual to have bumps along the way."
Clark added: " It's not the optimum situation. But, I think, you know, he has a very good grass roots campaign. He has been a leader from a position stand-up, for property tax. He has been harping on property taxes before the current situation kind of bubbled up to the extreme it is."
Matt Kelty/ (R) Mayoral Candidate: "I think I have more information than anyone else right now, that's why I am very confidant that the outcome will end up as it should. I think we can follow Governor Daniels lead. I look forward to the organization we build in this fall's campaign, being a part of his re-election campaign next fall."
When asked about the deep-divide between Allen County Republican Party leaders, specifically related to the local chairman dis-banding the party's executive committee last week. Clark said it was just "family fighting".
