Six years after the terrorist attacks, the question is as complicated as ever: how to make airline travel as safe as possible without discouraging people from flying. Nicole Pence reports from Fort Wayne International Airport.
Officials at FWA say it's business as usual on Tuesday. No flights have been canceled or delayed.
Fliers we spoke to felt that today is actually one of the safest days to fly because security is heightened across the country. Air travel across the country fell the two years after the nine-eleven terrorist attacks...including numbers here at Fort Wayne International.
But, with the increased security rules and exhaustive lists of prohibited items that are constantly reviewed and changed....airport officials argue flying is safer now, than ever before.
Jeff Hoffman/Fort Meyers: " It's probably the safest day to fly with security the way they changed it so I don't really think about it."
Kristi Holmes/FWA: " One of the big changes we put into effect since 9-11 is the 3-1-1 rule. Liquid items for carry-ons need to be in a 3oz.or smaller container and they have to fit inside a 1qt. zip-lock bag and one bag per passenger. Another recent development is about a month ago TSA came back and revised the restraint on lighters. So, people can now take personal lighters through security."
The Transportation Security Administration cites more than five million items have been confiscated at checkpoints this year alone. TSA has no time frame as to when they would lift any of the bans on items or the 3-11 rule.
