FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana's NewsCenter) - The state of Indiana is mandating unprecedented changes regarding back to school shots this year.

All 6th through 12th graders will need three new shots before school starts in late August.

In Allen County, 36,000 students will need a tetanus shot, a meningitis shot and the second booster shot of the chicken pox vaccine before the beginning of the school year.

The same rules apply to all Indiana 6th through 12th grade students.

The shots have been available for a while, but the new requirement was sent down by the Indiana Department of Health.

"Human nature is to wait so that's what we're doing here today is just trying to really encourage parents if you haven't done it yet please come in now," Super Shot Executive Director Kelly Zachrich said.

Meanwhile, if you child already has the three shots, just turn in an updated copy of their immunization record to your child's school.

"Don't wait until August because there is an opportunity, that they might miss that opportunity to get their children immunized before school entry," Zachrich said.

Kindergarten through 5th grade students will not be affected by the new rule.

Health experts want parents to know that family doctors, your county Department of Health and any of the ten Super Shot clinics in Allen County can immunize your child.

Those same health experts also suggest you schedule your child's shots in July instead of waiting two weeks before the school year.

Health officials are bracing for an unprecedented demand in August.
