All-Boys Charter in Final Negotiations for Building

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana’s NewsCenter) – The co-founders of an all-boys charter school in Fort Wayne are having information sessions for prospective parents and students at the Hessen Cassel branch of the Allen County Public Library and Renaissance Pointe YMCA.

Thomas Smith, a co-founder of the Smith Academy for Excellence, will be with fellow co-founders Cameron and Corey Smith at the Hessen Cassel branch Tuesday, June 12 from 4 p.m. – 7 p.m. updating parents on their progress.

After recent plans for building a facility fell through, Thomas Smith says the academy will look to fill the space inside the Fort Wayne Christian Center near the corner of Hanna and Lafayette Streets. He says they are in final negotiations to acquire the building.

“The building is large enough that it would accommodate the total number of students that we have, and it will offer the amenities we need for our school to function immediately in the fall.”

Smith says the building has already been renovated and is classroom ready. He adds that it has a commercialized kitchen and cafeteria ready for the 198 student charter, in addition to an auditorium.

Currently, Smith says less than half of the 198 student goal has been reached but he is confident that registration will pick up as the summer progresses. Smith says that regardless of the student quota, the 6-9 grade school will open.

Classes begin August 13.

Thursday, June 14 at the Hessen Cassel Branch of the Allen County Public Library 4 p.m. – 7 p.m.

Saturday, June 16 at the Renaissance Pointe YMCA 1 p.m. – 5 p.m.

Tuesday, June 19 at the Hessen Cassel Branch of the Allen County Public Library 4 p.m. – 7 p.m.
