FORT WAYNE, Ind. (21Alive) -- A vacation to the southwest will no longer require a detour to Indianapolis.

Allegiant Air has officially launched its direct flights from Fort Wayne to the Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport.

They will operate flights on Wednesday and Saturday afternoons.

Officials with the airlines say research showed that a flight to Phoenix was something Fort Wayne customers really wanted.

“Every airport experiences some level of what we call leakage," Jessica Miller, Fort Wayne International Airport said. “Our passengers are diverting from the Fort Wayne area, Indianapolis, Chicago and Detroit. And we're leaking those passengers to those other airports who have service to Phoenix.”

Leaders at the Fort Wayne Airport lobbied airlines for Phoenix flights for years. After Allegiant added new jets to its fleet, leaders agreed to operate the flights to and from Fort Wayne.
