American Federation of Teachers Proposing Teacher Tests

UNDATED (www.incnow.tv) - If lawyers have to pass a Bar Exam, should teachers have to pass a mandatory entrance exam too?

That's what the American Federation of Teachers is proposing.

Currently, states determine their own teaching certifications.

But in a recent report, the AFT says educators should design a national exam that tests potential teachers on individual subjects and their abilities in the classroom.

The local leader of the National Education Association says there's already a testing process in place but agrees some changes are needed.

Al Jacquay II, President of the Fort Wayne Education Association said, “There should be a year long practicum, just like a doctor, where you would be with a mentor teacher for a full year instead of just student teaching for X amount of weeks."

Last week, the Indiana Board of Education passed licensing changes that make it easier for teachers to switch subject areas or get hired without a background in education.
