FORT WAYNE, Ind. (www.incnow.tv) – A suspected pharmacy robber was shot dead by Fort Wayne police early Wednesday morning.
Police say Stephen Wattley II, 21, of Fort Wayne, robbed the CVS, 2802 E. State Blvd., around 2:30.
Responding officers saw Wattley running from the pharmacy, leading to a foot chase that ended at Baldwin Creek Apartments along Hobson Road, according to police.
Fort Wayne police report seeing Wattley armed; that's when officers shot him, police say.
Paramedics pronounced Wattley dead at the scene. Wattley's death has been ruled a homicide by the Allen County coroner's office.
Police have identified the police officer involved in the shooting as Jeffery E. Burkholder Sr. a veteran of the department for more than 31 years. Burkholder has been placed on administrative leave under departmental policy for firing upon Wattley.
A second officer, who was near the shooting, is also on administrative leave.
The investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
