FORT WAYNE, Ind. (21Alive) -- Now that the federal government has started allowing people to sign up for health insurance coverage, scam artists are popping up.
According to the Better Business Bureau, people in our area and across the country are getting phone calls at all hours of the day and night.
The caller tends to have a foreign accent and asks for personal information... Like your Social Security, Medicare or bank account number to be able to supposedly send you a new Affordable Care Act health care card.
But Social Security and Medicare never call you. Those agencies will send you an official letter in the mail instead.
So if you get any kind of call about signing up for health care or giving your personal information over the phone, just hang up.
“Do not communicate, do not talk to them, just hang up. Because the more you talk to them or say don't call me back, they'll call you back. So number one is just hang up on them. If you do get engaged in conversation, don't give them any information,” says Marjorie Stephens at the Better Business Bureau.
However, these scammers are slick and will try to keep you on the phone, to confuse you into sharing valuable information about yourself.
“They're asking for bank account number, they're asking for your Social Security number, your Medicare card number, which, again, is one and the same. And so people just don't do it. If they give you, if you give them your account number or bank routing number, that money will be gone in a flash. And there have been people that have lost money because of this,” Stephens adds.
If you accidentally give out your information, the bank immediately, explain what happened and ask to put a freeze on all withdrawals from the account.
Then call the Better Business Bureau at 423-4433. The people there can help walk you through the next steps of contacting agencies like the police, the FBI and the Federal Trade Commission, as well as tracking your credit report to make sure the scammers haven't used your information.
