Fort Wayne, Ind. (www.incnow.tv) - A community is mourning the death of Bishop Emeritus John D'Arcy. Thursday the doors of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception were open to all as community members and parishioners came to pay their respects.
"He was much more than just a Bishop for the Catholic community, he was a good friend to many of us who are not Catholics throughout the community," said Mac Parker.
D'Arcy served as Bishop of the Fort Wayne-South Bend Diocese for 24 years before retiring. He beat cancer once but lost his battle with another form of the disease February 3.
At his visitation Thursday many reflected on the memories they have, and how he was there for them thorough good and bad.
"I lost a son a couple of years ago, he made the effort to come to the funeral home, and that was very, very special to me," said Donna Brooke.
"Christmas Mass at midnight, he always had a beautiful way of preaching the homily. When you thought that you knew everything, you didn't," said Kellee Bibbo.
"It's just a real blessing to be able to come and pay our last respects and we hope that he's enjoying his reunion in heaven," said Dan Avila.
"This has been a truly beautiful outpouring of support from the people of our diocese," said Bishop Kevin Rhoades, Catholic Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend.
The visitation took place all day Thursday. In the evening the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception was filled for the Rosary and Evening Prayer.
There will be another visitation Friday morning from 9:00 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. at the Fort Wayne Cathedral. The funeral will air live on 21 Alive at noon Friday. More than 1,000 people are expected to attend.
