Andrews, IN (Indiana's NewsCenter) -- Officials with the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) have closed the beach at Salamonie Lake because of low water.

The beach will be closed for the Memorial Day weekend.

DNR says the lake is 14 feet below the normal summer level as a result of dry weather this spring.

Boating and fishing will still be available however the DNR is discouraging water skiing for safety reasons. They believe the shallow water will leave water skiers more vulnerable to underwater hazards.

Officials say even though the beach will be closed and water skiing is discouraged, there are still plenty activities for families to enjoy at the lake on Memorial Day weekend from hiking and horse trails to bird watching.

Salamonie Lake is located at 9214 West-Lost Bridge West in Andrews Indiana.
