NEW HAVEN, Ind. (21Alive) – After 20 years, steam locomotive 765 is up and running again.
Engine 765 was chugging along Sunday as train enthusiasts were able to get up close and take tours inside the conductor's cab.
The Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society held an open house in New Haven featuring caboose rides and vintage rail equipment.
Engine 765 is a component of Headwaters Junction, a plan to include the train and rail system as part of Legacy Fort Wayne’s Riverfront Development Study.
Organizers say it'll add more life to downtown Fort Wayne, and its economy.
"This engine experiences around 3,000 people or more a day, and that's 3,000 more people that could be enjoying a variety of different things in our downtown. Wouldn't it be incredible to take a dinner train through downtown, or be on the river and watch this old steam train go by? There's a lot of really incredible things that could be built up around the locomotive,” said Kelly Lynch, Communications Director with the Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society.
To add to the excitement, engine 765 will be making passenger trips from Fort Wayne to Lafayette, Ind. on October 26 and 27. Tickets will be available beginning September 1 at 6 p.m.
