FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana’s NewsCenter) - Drastic changes maybe looming for Fort Wayne Fire Department.
If Fort Wayne's budget is consistent, the fire department may be forced to make extreme changes. The fire department is already operating at 30 firefighters 'below' full capacity, with more retiring or leaving every year, and there's no chance of hiring new ones.
Chief Amy Biggs says she may be forced to do what similar communities have done by cutting back on services like the Safety Village and Arson Investigations, and go to rolling brownouts or blackouts at fire stations.
Everyday, Chief Biggs pays about five firefighters overtime just to meet the bare minimum staffing levels.
