Fort Wayne, Ind. (Indiana’s NewsCenter) - Disaster was averted early Monday on Fort Wayne's near westside, when city firefighters rescued a family from a burning home, and just in the nick of time.
It happened at 1819 Riedmiller Avenue.
There were a total of five people saved, as flames began to intensify.
T’Juana Williams says that she, another adult friend, and three kids ages 3 to 8, were in the upstairs of the home a little after 1:30 a.m., when Williams realized smoke was filling the room.
She rustled everyone from sleep, and they climbed out a window on to the porch roof.
A firefighter used a ladder to get the family off the roof.
Williams says there was a sense of urgency, because the fire was starting to get bigger on the floor below.
“The firefighter came over to us and started helping us get down, but fire was coming so fast, it was hot, and it was like coming out the windows and stuff, and so they started rushing us down, because it was getting pretty close to him, to the firefighter, so we had to hurry up,” says Williams.
It took fire crews about 18 minutes to control the blaze.
The investigation continues into how it started, though Fire Chief Amy Biggs says so far, there is no sign of anything suspicious.
The first floor was heavily involved, as well as the porch area, so damage will likely prevent anyone from living in the home for some time.
