Fort Wayne, Ind. (Indiana’s NewsCenter) - Friday morning the Fort Wayne Fire Department responded to a house fire in the 100 block of West Dewald Street with reports that the home’s occupants were trapped on the roof.
Heavy flames and smoke could be seen coming from the second story as fire crews arrived to the scene around 8:30 a.m.
A construction worker working nearby the home used his ladder to help the four trapped individuals escape before fire crews arrived.
Thankfully the four adults and one child were uninjured.
Monika Kreckmann, "We saw an antique chair on fire and black smoke billowing out. So we grabbed him up and ran towards the balcony, and we woke everybody else up in the house."
Zach Townsend: "We came over and got a ladder out of our shop and put it up there to get them down. And by the time they got down, the flames had started coming out of the house. And it was over after that, basically. We got everybody out safe."
Fire crews entered the home and extinguished the flames preventing the fire’s spread to the rest of the house.
The home to the west was scorched.
Monika tells us she thinks a candle may have re-ignited.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
