FORT WAYNE, Ind. (21Alive) - After ten days of the government being closed federally funded programs are counting down the days until they're forced to close as well.

21Alive checked in with an organization that doesn't rely on federally dollars, The Community Harvest Food Bank. Executive Director Jane Avery says they're ready to help those who may lose benefits from federal programs later this month.

WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) and Head Start, a preschool program that provides lunch for children, are just two of several programs that rely on federal funding. In Fort Wayne, both of those groups say they only have enough money for run for the next few weeks.

These closures would leave families finding new ways to get food. That's why Community Harvest would be a good place for families to go to fill the gap.

The food bank gets minimal federal funding through grants, but isn't relying on that money to operate.

Avery says this shutdown should be a wake up call for federal programs to cut back. She says many non profits find ways to do that without hurting their mission.

"I think the more important thing is that we all look, and we say look money is an issue, in your family life and in the life of government, and we need to be very, very careful about our money. We need to be careful about our programs, and looking at their outcomes," said Jane Avery, Executive Director, Community Harvest Food Bank.

The Community Harvest Food Bank holds their Helping Hands Food Distribution every Saturday morning from 9:00 - 11:30. Everyone is welcome and there is no income requirement.
