Fort Wayne Fire Department Facing Tough Choices

Fort Wayne, Ind. (Indiana’s NewsCenter) - If Fort Wayne’s budget is consistent the fire department may be forced to make drastic changes.

The fire department is already operating below full capacity with only 30-firefighters and more are retiring or leaving every year.

Leaders say there's no chance of hiring new ones.

Chief Amy Biggs says she may be forced to do what similar communities have done, cut back on services like Safety Village and go to rolling brownouts or blackouts at fire stations.

Currently about five firefighters are paid overtime every day to meet the minimum staffing levels.
