FORT WAYNE, Ind. (21Alive) -- 2013 marked Fort Wayne and Allen County's deadliest year. But after last year's record-breaking 45 homicides, the city seems to have taken a turn in the right direction.

To date, the Summit City has seen five homicides in 2014. By the beginning of September in 2013, that number was already at 23.

After comparing the data, 21Alive found the last time the city's record was this clean, dates back to 1987.

"This year, we have seen more cooperation from the public than we have in a long time. Last year shocked people, those numbers, and people realized that's just not the character of our city," said Michael Joyner with the Fort Wayne Police Department.
