FORT WAYNE, Ind. (21ALIVE) --- A stalking nightmare for a Fort Wayne woman will be re-told through a broadcast that the nation will see.
Dawn Hillyer will be featured in a half-hour program airing on "Investigation Discovery" Channel.
Hillyer survived a terrible ordeal, put through six years of torment, at the hands of a computer savvy ex-boyfriend.
She hopes programs like the one airing Monday will eventually lead to better protections for women put through a living hell.
Hillyer is in a much better place now than she was when Mike McClellan refused to give her a moment's peace.
She broke off their dating relationship in 2005 with no real problems.
A year later, as the segment on “Investigation Discovery” illustrates, he came storming back into her life.
"Out of the blue, in October 2006, she gets a surprise call,” the program narrator explains.
" I was on my way home from a Rolling Stones concert, all of a sudden my phone just started blowing up, it rang and rang and rang, back to back. All these text messages, all from Mike demanding to see me," Hillyer says during an interview in the segment.
It got worse, as McClellan relentlessly used electronic gadgets to harass Hillyer with threatening messages, even hacking into her personal computer, sending out explicit photos of Hillyer to her friends, family and business clients.
Last year, McClellan was convicted and sentenced to ten years for stalking, but not until his victim endured years of suffering before police and prosecutors finally put the clamps on McClellan.
Hillyer now crusades for better protections for women.
She hopes Indiana will follow the lead of Ohio and Michigan and implement GPS tracking for convicted felony stalkers.
" One of the questions, and it still scares me to this day, is what happens when he gets out of jail. I refuse to crawl under a rock when he does, but it still scares me every day. I know it's going to come back around," Hillyer said.
She and Fort Wayne detective Lorrie Bandor, who worked on the case, are flying to New York to be on the Katie Couric daytime talk show.
That segment will air December 17th, bringing attention to a serious issue for anyone who has ever been badgered by a stalker.
