FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana’s NewsCenter) - Fort Wayne's recycling program is honored on the national level.
The city's one cart recycling program received a gold award for excellence in collection systems.
It is the highest level awarded by the Solid Waste Management Association of North America.
Mayor Tom Henry is excited that the program has been such a success.
“We knew that our program was strong and that many others were wondering how we did it, now we are thrilled that our program is receiving national recognition and has become a model for other communities,” Henry said.
The new program saved 3,500 tons of trash from being put into landfills.
The program also made the city $500,000 last year. It is on track to make the city $700,000 this year.
