FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana’s NewsCenter) - As the mercury rises and you need help escaping the heat you can call Community Action of Northeast Indiana, CANI, representatives or Salvation Army officials.

Salvation Army representatives are handing out fans to those who qualify.

“The main thing is that you have a physical condition that is aggravated by the heat and you would need a doctor's note,” Salvation Army Representative Timothy Smith said. “We ask that you do check with CANI first to see if you qualify for their program and then if you don't then give us a call. We'll tell you what you need to do and then set up an appointment.”

But organization is running low on fans and desperately need donations.

“Unfortunately we are pretty much out of fans and air conditioners,” Smith said. “Each donation that we get I would just tell people that's one more family that you'll be comforting and especially the people that really need it.”

If you would like to donate a fan call the Salvation Army at 260-744-2311 or visit them at 2901 North Clinton Street, Fort Wayne.

Fans will be distributed to those who qualify on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m.

CANI administrators will help pay $50 of your air conditioning bill if you're a low-income qualifying family. CANI is also giving out air conditioners to low-income families with seniors, a disabilied person, or children under five-years-old.

"But the senior, disabled person or child under five must have a medical need verified by a doctor's statement," CANI official Pam Brookshire said.

To receive help for this program call CANI at 260-423-3546 or 1-800-589-2264 or visit them at 227 East Washington Blvd. in Fort Wayne.

Comfort Keepers of Fort Wayne will also provide help to senior citizens in the heat. Comfort Keepers officials say they will provide a fan and water for a low-income senior citizen who is without an air conditioner. The company will also drive senior citizens to a friend’s home with air conditioning or to a public location with air conditioning. To receive this help from Comfort Keepers call 260-484-5858 or for residents living in Huntington County, Columbia City, Churubusco call 1-877-484-5850.
