FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana's NewsCenter) -- An apparently perfectly-placed lightning strike left nearly 100,000 Frontier phone and internet customers without service Wednesday.
Frontier's senior vice president for Indiana said lightning hit a cable along US 33 in Churubusco around 3:30 Wednesday morning.
He says lightning hit the cable in a way that not only knocked out internet and phone service, it also took out the redundant paths set up to get around the situation if the main fiber line is taken out.
Most customers saw their service restored just before seven in the morning, but corporate clients took longer because many of them needed to have equipment reset.
Frontier was just one of many companies using that cable, and its VP says while it was the only provider in our area to take a hit, it's not something to change the way they do business.
"In order to take it to nationwide delivery, you hook up with other networks that adjoin or that are contiguous to you. It's just a much more responsible way to do it than one company being responsible to every household in the United States," Greg Stephens said.
Stephens added that Frontier had crews working overtime to make sure service was restored to every customer.
