FORT WAYNE, Ind. (www.incnow.tv) - Gas prices spiked overnight leaving drivers paying at least $4.25 a gallon Wednesday morning.

Many drivers 21 Alive spoke with at the pump said they were avoiding filling their cars all the way up. Instead they were just putting in what they knew they needed for now to get to work.

Tuesday a gallon of regular gas was just shy of $4 a gallon. Most gas stations are $4.25, as of Wednesday evening, but some are as high as $4.29.

An expert with GasBuddy cites maintenance at an Illinois refinery as the source of the spike in price. Work at that refinery was expected to take 35 days but is now taking at least 40 days.

U.S. Senator Dan Coats thinks the solution is to drill more oil in North America, but he knows the current administration is against it.

"The administration refuses to let us build a pipeline to bring it down from Canada. That would add to the supply because I mean in the end it's a supply and demand issue here. The more oil you have available the lower the price can go," said U.S. Senator Dan Coats, (R) Indiana.

If prices reach $4.29, Fort Wayne will meet the all-time high that was set on May 3, 2011. On Dec. 19, 2012 gas was at its lowest for our area over a 12 month period at $2.96.

According to GasBuddy, the average price across the state is $4.02 in Indiana and $3.86 in Ohio. The national average is $3.63 and the lowest price across the nation is $3.17 in South Carolina.
