Hudson, Ind. (Indiana’s NewsCenter) - 23 guns are on the streets, falling into the wrong hands, after someone broke into The Angler Bait and Tackle in Hudson early Monday morning.
"He knew what he wanted and he was targeting the hand guns. He went right to the case and he knew exactly what he wanted,” said Susan Culler, store owner.
Susan is one of the store owners. She says it's concerning to know how many weapons this person got away with.
"It's not just 1 or 2 little guns, or long guns or whatever. These are handguns that can harm people and it's very serious. The quantity of 23, it's very serious,” said Culler.
"Studies have shown that these guns end up in the hands of the wrong people, used in other felony crimes, to facilitate drug deals,” said John Gonya, Chief Deputy, Steuben County Sheriff's Department.
It took just two minutes for the robber to bust out the front door, break into the locked case and escape with the handguns. The owners are now working on more security measures. Right after the robbery they installed bars on their front doors and are now looking at adding more cameras.
"If somebody wants to break in and steal something, they're going to do it. It's going to slow them down,” said Culler.
For now police are relying on the public to help them solve this case.
"Any information that people have out there, that someone came across some guns suddenly, anything the public can get us, a lead to work on,” said Gonya.
The ATF, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, is working with the Steuben County Sheriff's Department offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction. Tips can be left at 1-800-ATF-GUNS, all information will be treated confidentially.
The National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) of Newton Connecticut has announced that they will match the $5000 reward offered by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF). The NSSF is the trade association for the firearms industry and works closely with the ATF.
