The more than 1,000 people who visited to Community Harvest Food Bank this morning received some important information.
Medtech College of Fort Wayne had nurses and students on hand to provide free health screenings for visitors. They administered blood pressure tests, checked vitals, and educated people on healthy living.
The director of career services at Medtech, Chris Palevich, says that, for many of the people coming through the food bank, going to the doctor is not high on their priority list. He says that's where his nursing students can help because "students interact with the visitors, teach them a little about healthcare, about their eating styles, about exercising, about what they could be doing to potentially create a healthier lifestyle for themselves."
Palevich says a campaign like this one is also good practice for his students to get real-life interaction with patients.
