FORT WAYNE, Ind. (www.incnow.tv) -- A frightening crime in a historic Fort Wayne neighborhood.
A violent home invasion has residents in Southwood Park feeling unnerved.
That’s because somebody breaking into a home in the middle of the night, and assaulting the person living there is not a common occurrence in the middle-class neighborhood.
Police say before 5 a.m. Thursday, an unidentified suspect kicked in a door of a home in the 1000 block of Pasadena Drive near Foster Park.
Burglary is a frightening crime for any resident, but officers say in this case, it was even worse, because the woman at home was assaulted with a hammer.
" The victim woke up at that time, and was attacked by the suspect. The suspect also stole several personal items from the victim," said Sgt. Mark Brooks with Fort Wayne PD.
" We bought a lock that we normally didn't have on the gate, and we bought some motion sensor lights to put up. We've lived here for 10 years and never thought of those things, and of course, now we have to, and it's too bad, it's still a great neighborhood, but it's a terrible thing that happened," said Christina Gaskill, who lives across the street from the scene of the break-in.
Police have not released the victim’s name.
We were told at last report, she was in serious condition, with multiple lacerations to the head.
Police characterized the injuries as non-life threatening, but a woman who emailed the newsroom, claiming to be the victim's sister, said police are wrongly downplaying the extent of her injuries.
At the time of this report, we were unable to verify her relationship to the woman.
We’re told the association's Facebook page had 45 comments about the home invasion on it, before a discussion thread was taken down.
Police say there were other minor thefts in that area around the time of the hammer attack, which are likely connected to that case.
