ANDREWS, Ind. (Indiana’s NewsCenter) – Dutch oven cooking, candle making, goat milking and even chicken-butchering are just some of the activities going on this weekend at the Hoosier Homestead Gathering at Salamonie Lake in Andrews.
Groups of families made the trip out to the Salamonie Reservoir today for some fun and education. There are opportunities to learn how use solar power, farm your own land and learn how to be more self-sufficient.
Interpretive Naturalist Teresa Rody calls this weekend’s events a chance to get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. She says, "It's just a way to calm and slow down and live closer to the land and do some things for yourself and find out how great things taste when you grow them and enjoy those things at home."
Tastes are certainly a main attraction this weekend. Homestead enthusiast Loretta Herschberger says the food is the best. She says, “It was awesome. We had lasagna, cornbread, beans, several different kinds of beans, ham, cobbler and a lot of real good stuff.”
Tonight’s events last until 7 p.m. and tomorrow’s go until 5 p.m.
Tomorrow’s agenda:
11 a.m. - Planting trees and shrubs for wind breaks, food and shade
