Fort Wayne, Ind. (Indiana's NewsCenter) - The woman who was pulled from a Baer Road home early Thursday morning remains in critical condition at a local hospital Thursday night.
Police say 23-year-old Sharon Dennis was rescued from the smoke filled home around 4:45 A.M. by a Fort Wayne police officer who many are hailing a hero.
The officer was nearby and was first to respond to the emergency call.
After arriving at the home the officer found 32-year-old Isaac Eix on the lawn, who said a woman was still inside the burning home, the officer then fought through the smoke and pulled Dennis to safety and performed CPR until the first fire trucks arrived.
Any time someone is critically hurt in a fire, certain procedures have to be followed.
Stacy Fleming with the Fort Wayne Fire Department says, “Whenever there are patients included in a response or patients critically injured in a response we do call out for investigators to come out as well as police to come out. It's standard protocol, It's impossible to go backwards, therefore we do everything at the scene at that time.”
Firefighters also rescued a dog from the burning home and resuscitated it with CPR.
Investigators have determined the fire was an accident and was caused by some unattended items on the stove.
It's still not clear if the house had a working smoke detector.
