Fort Wayne, Ind. (Indiana's NewsCenter) - Fort Wayne fire investigators say they cannot determine what sparked a fire that killed a man this spring on Andre Lane.
59-year-old James Billions was found in dead in his garage May, 30th. The coroner reported his death was from thermal burns and smoke inhalation.
The Fort Wayne Fire Department was dispatched to Billions' house on the city’s southeast side just after noon on Wednesday. Deputy Fire Chief Eric Lahey said firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze, most of which was centered in the home’s attached garage. Lahey also said it was in that garage that fire crews found Billions.
According to the fire department, another person was inside the home during the time of the fire and was able to make it out of the home safely. They also say two 911 phone calls were made. One came from a neighbor. The second call came from the person who escaped the fire.
Lahey said the fire was so intense that he did not believe any person could have made it out alive.
"The chances of anyone surviving in that atmosphere are very slim, and that would have surprised me had anybody made it out of there. Even for a firefighter to be in those conditions, they can only last probably about five or six seconds."
The description of the person who escaped the fire has not been released.
