Fort Wayne, Ind. (www.incnow.tv ) – Budget cuts are looming at IPFW as the university works to trim back millions in spending.
IPFW is facing a $4.2 million budget shortfall this fiscal year which is almost twice the $2.2 million shortfall they faced last year.
"What we've been doing is already cutting back our expenditures,” said Walt Branson, Vice Chancellor for Financial Affairs.
Branson says since they know what lies ahead the school administration is already looking for where they can save and how much.
"We've been holding vacancies open and as we look at many of those vacancies that's how we'll get budget cuts for next year,” said Branson.
Branson stresses IPFW is taking a proactive approach to this budget shortfall by not spending what isn't there but says there are still a lot of unknowns.
"We're still close to the bottom of the list when you look at funding per student,” said Branson.
So advocating for more money per student from the state is very important for IPFW.
Branson says a boost in state funding or a state-approved tuition increase would significantly help offset the loss in revenue. But those are questions that won't be answered for many months so IPFW is looking now for ways to save and cut.
"We try to identify things that don't have major impacts on the university, but where we can reduce service levels. Our primary goal really is, we have to preserve academics,” said Branson. "Hopefully we can get to the point where there isn't a whole lot of pain we're feeling as we go through this."
IPFW is still in the beginning of their 2012-2013 fiscal year. While they are cutting back on spending now the actual budget cuts won't be on the table until next spring.
