BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (Indiana’s NewsCenter) – Three Indiana universities have bought several .xxx domain names to help protect their educational institutions from the pornography industry.
Indiana, Purdue, and Indiana State Universities have all bought domains ending with the .xxx suffix. Domain names range from $20 a year to a few hundred.
The .xxx suffix was designation for the adult entertainment industry on the web, not unlike the .gov for government, and .edu for education.
Indiana University is paying $2,200 to secure 11-domain name for 10-years and Purdue and Indiana State have spent less than $1000 to keep their names separated from being connected to a pornography site.
