FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana's NewsCenter) - Fort Wayne students picked up their backpacks and headed to class Monday, marking the first day of school for the state's second largest school system.
FWCS administrators have a lot to accomplish in the new school year, including fixing up several of the district's aging school buildings.
In May, 66 percent of Fort Wayne voters cast their ballots in favor of a $119million referendum that will provide FWCS with the funds needed to improve infrastructure throughout the district. Snider High School will receive a $40million chunk of those funds.
The first phase of the project is expected to get underway in spring 2013, but the entire project could take several years to complete.
Administrators are also taking up a new goal this school year. Superintendent Wendy Robinson says they're making a bigger effort to highlight the district's successes and value within the community.
"We know how good we are, and we know the services and the education that we provide for students, but I think it reminds us that we need to constantly communicate with our customers and our stakeholders," says Robinson. "We make no mistake about the fact that our parents and our students are our customers."
Parents are also being encouraged to download the district's new application for Apple or Android. Designed by a Blackhawk Middle School student, the app can be downloaded from the Google Play Store.
