Fort Wayne, Ind. (Indiana's NewsCenter) - The maximum penalty is handed down to a local woman charged with abusing a 3-year-old boy.

31-year-old Tawoenya Portee is going to spend the next 8 years behind bars followed by two years probation. In addition, she's not allowed any contact with the boy for the next ten years.

Portee is accused of using shoes, a belt and a bat to beat the 3-year old. Friday she addressed the court apologizing for not alerting law enforcement of the harm being done to the child, but didn't admit to physically harming the boy herself.

Portee was charged in April with neglect of a dependent and two counts of battery. In a plea agreement she pleaded guilty to the neglect charge.

Portee's girlfriend and the mother of the young boy, 23-year-old Nicole Gruss was sentenced earlier this week in this same case.

Gruss also took a plea agreement. She will spend 8 years in prison followed by two years probation.
