FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana’s NewsCenter) – The local Burmese community gathered Friday for a celebration of sorts. They were welcoming the release of Burma’s pro-Democracy dissident and Noble Peace Laureate Aung San Suu Kyi.
The 65-year-old public figure has spent the past 15 years under house arrest.
“I think it is important for Americans to know and the people of Fort Wayne to know, Aung San Suu Kyi is the George Washington of Burmese democracy,” said John Moore, from the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Fort Wayne. “She is someone the entire Burmese people can rally behind.”
Following her release, Suu Kyi said she will continue to pursue her goal of a Democratic Myanmar and called for a national reconciliation and talks with the country’s military leadership.
