Fort Wayne, Ind. (Indiana’s NewsCenter) - A group of Fort Wayne businesses are working together to reinvigorate a south side shopping plaza. Saturday was the annual Community Celebration at the Kmart plaza on South Anthony.

The event's organizers say they want to encourage people to keep supporting the businesses on the city's south side.

It's a very family friendly event. They had bounce houses for the kids, The Fort Wayne Fire Department brought one of their engines and there were many businesses giving out everything from ice cream samples to free bike helmets.

The group that inspired this event is sad to see less people and struggling businesses on their side of town and they believe events like this can help change that.

"We have like 3 or 4 vacant buildings still in the area. A lot of people are still a little hesitant towards this side of town and I feel like if they would see all the good that we are bringing to this area that it would help generate the population back to the south side,” said Nita Rodriguez, Advance America.

This is the second year for the Community Celebration. They plan to continue it as an annual event.
