FORT WAYNE, Ind. (www.incnow.tv) – After a deadly fire at a Brazil nightclub on Sunday left more than 200 people dead, some local establishments are taking a look at their own emergency procedures to make sure something like this never happens here.
Some precautions, according to Fort Wayne Fire Marshal Jim Murua, include annual checks at every bar and club in town to make sure proper safety measures are being taken.
One of the biggest parts of any fire fighters' job is to keep us safe, and for the Fort Wayne Fire Department that means being proactive. They make sure every bar, club, and business properly manages crowd capacity, as well as making sure there are clearly lit and accessible fire exits and extinguishers. They have even been known to show up unannounced on occasion to make sure everybody is complying.
"During that process we make sure their fire alarm systems, sprinkler systems, kitchen hood systems, and their exit ways are not obstructed,” Murua says of his crew’s inspections, “those are the things we're looking at."
Of course club patrons need to know how to keep themselves safe as well. Murua added one of the best ways you can keep yourself safe is to know your surroundings. Be sure to know where the nearest exit is at all times, because it may not be the door you came in.
One of the bigger clubs in Fort Wayne, Piere’s, is also being proactive when it comes to its guest’s safety. They have 15 emergency exits spread throughout the building, as well as fire extinguishers behind every bar. According to its manager Herbie Liddell, keeping their guests safe, as well as entertained, is their top priority.
"Every single exit is marked, so not only are our staff able to easily identify which is the easiest way to exit during an emergency, but we try to make it as plain and easy as possible for all of our clientele as well.”
Some reports cite on-stage pyrotechnics as the cause of the fire in Brazil, but luckily Piere's does not allow pyrotechnics at any of their shows, mainly for safety and liability reasons. But you will never find any pyro shows at Fort Wayne venues because they are outlawed.
But Piere’s manages to make up for that with their extravagant light show for added entertainment.
