FORT WAYNE, Ind. (21Alive) -- A dedication ceremony took place today for the grand opening of Volunteers of America's Richard Lugar Safe Haven for Veterans.
The ceremony took place at the Safe Haven's location at 2424 Fairfield Avenue. The Safe Haven is funded by the Veterans Administration to provide a place of residence for homeless veterans looking to transition to permanent and stable housing.
"Statistics tell us there are already so many homeless veterans and it's a population that continues to grow, so this fills a critical gap," explains Lisa Christen, Regional Program Director for the Fort Wayne veteran programs.
Veterans may stay in a Safe Haven for up to 6 months.
