FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana’s NewsCenter) – Thirteen Whitley County horses and ponies are eating a solid meal for dinner for the first time in months.

The U.S. Equine and Shadarobah Animal Rescue groups are now taking care of the horses.

Shadarobah owner Michelle Heitz says the horses haven’t eaten a proper meal since last winter.

The animals were removed from owner James Mullins, Wednesday. This isn't the first time horses have been taken from him. Several horses were seized in 2004 as well.

County officials found the animals malnourished and surrounded in mud.

The Whitley County Prosecutor says he plans on filing charges on Mullins early next week.

Heitz says malnourishment of horses happens more often than you'd think.

“The message that I would say to somebody the very first time they can't afford to feed their horse the first meal is get on the phone and call a rescue in your area,” Heitz said. “Some of those people do call us and say, hey I just lost my job I need to be proactive before I can't feed my horse and that is the time to act. Starving to death is a long tortuous process and if you love them, call us because we will find an answer. Call us and we will get you to a rescue in your area. We will get you assistance.”

Shadarobah wasn’t expecting to care for eight of the 13 horses and are asking for your help. Monetary donations will help pay veterinarian bills. Fifteen dollars will help trim the horses injured hooves. Food and volunteers are also desperately needed.

Shadarobah is also having a Rock and Soul Music Benefit on Saturday August 7 from 9:00 p.m. until 1:00 a.m. The cost is $5.00. You must be 21 or older to attend.

If you want to call and help or are in need of help call 260-715-0190. You can visit Shadarobah at 10113 Goshen Road (U.S. Hwy 33) Fort Wayne, IN.
