FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana’s NewsCenter) - In Allen County the big packets sent to potential jurors are being replaced by a postcard that directs people to the Internet. The cards have a link and all the information people need to log in online to fill out their questionnaire.
Once this new juror notification system is fully in place selected jurors will also get text messages to update them if they are no longer needed. That is technology not being used anywhere else in the nation yet.
The new systems will save money and make the process faster.
"I'm really hopeful that it's going to make it easier for people to do jury duty. It is a privilege to serve on a jury and it's hopeful that we will make it easier for you to do that," said Judge Fran Gull, Allen Superior Court.
Right now the postcards are being sent out along with the packets. That will continue for the next few weeks until the new system is fully up and running.
Another change in the Allen County court system is at the Bud Meeks Justice Center. There three monitors have been installed above the counters inside the entrance.
Judge Gull says the new monitors will display the court schedules. That will replace the paper copies currently posted in the court.
“We've had a couple of complaints and we had a compliant from an individual who said, unless you've been over here before you really don't know what it is that you're expected to do. And my staff and I went in and looked on a Monday morning when it was the most crowded. It quickly became apparent to me that folks really understand the whole idea of the monitors because everyone's been into an airport, and everybody has seen that type of technology,” said Judge Gull.
Judge Gull expects the new monitors to be up and running by mid-June. She then hopes to get the same technology in the Allen County Courthouse as well.
