FORT WAYNE, Ind. (21Alive) - Fort Wayne City Council approved some big changes that could potentially bring jobs close to home.
This week, City Council approved the creation of the airport overlay district.
This overlay gives Fort Wayne International Airport the opportunity to review future nearby development. Prior to this, they had very little say in new buildings and operations coming in.
The 122nd Fighter Wing in Fort Wayne is happy about this approval as well because it preserves the airspace that would support a new fleet of F-35, or Joint Strike Fighter jets.
According to Col. David Augustine, these fighter jets could bring up to 100 new airmen jobs to Fort Wayne.
Augustine admits it's a very long process. Even if the F-35s are promised in the near future, the 122nd Fighter Wing won't see them until 2020.
Regardless, he says they're hopeful they can bring this technology and job opportunity to the Summit City.
