New Requirements For Unemployment Insurance Recipients

September 17, 2013 Updated Sep 17, 2013 at 10:03 AM EDT

INDIANA (21Alive) -- In accordance with House Enrolled Act 1457, also known as “Jobs For Hoosiers” from the 2013 legislative session of the Indiana General Assembly, all unemployed individuals receiving unemployment insurance will now be required to go to their local WorkOne for an in-person review of their work search records and an orientation to WorkOne services after their 4th week of receiving benefits.

This legislation, signed into law earlier this year by Governor Mike Pence is aimed at getting unemployed Hoosiers integrated with WorkOne services and programs and on track to reemployment as quickly as possible.

Unemployed Hoosiers will begin receiving notices about this requirement, as well as information about scheduling their in-person WorkOne visit in October. More information about this new program, including pre-visit obligations can be found on the Indiana Department of Workforce Development’s (DWD) homepage at www.in.gov/dwd.

“We definitely see this provision as one of the most important steps we can take to help get Hoosiers back to work as soon as possible,” said Scott B. Sanders, Commissioner of the Department of Workforce Development. “Our staff will be able to provide insight on how to improve job search techniques and introduce clients to all of the services WorkOne offers.”

As previously required, all unemployment insurance recipients must report and keep track of the three places they looked for work each week. In addition, unemployed Hoosiers must be able to show a record of their weekly work searches and a photo ID at the in-person WorkOne visit or risk losing benefits. Unemployment insurance recipients should make sure their address is up-to-date in Uplink, Indiana’s online unemployment insurance filing system, to ensure they get the notice.
